How many of you have read or heard of the ancient Greek poem the lliad?
The hero of this story is Achilles, a war hero who is filled with too much
pride and anger. In the end, Achilles finds compassion for his enemy. He
begins to understand that his own personal glory won't make him happy,
that happiness comes from his relationship to other human beings.
Now listen to these words from George Chapman, who translated The Iliad
from Greek to English in the seventeenth century. He said:
They are only truly great who are truly good.
Achilles learned this lesson the hard way. Today, remember this: If you
want to be a truly great human being, you must first strive to be a truly
good human being.
