Dear Parents, Guardian, and Players, The Gresham School Board and Gresham School Administration talked about the issue of having fans at junior high or senior high volleyball and soccer games. The Gresham School Board voted to have no fans at home, junior high or senior high volleyball games and to have a maximum of four fans per athlete at home soccer games. There will be NO visiting fans at any athletic events during the fall sport seasons. Soccer games are held outside, and the ability to wear a mask and social distance are not as big an issue as it is for our small gymnasium. Please read the following letter for further details. Dear Parents, We have a lot of homework and art projects in the gym. If you have not stopped down to pick up your student’s work, we are open on Monday to Wednesday-8:00 am-4:00 pm. After these days, we will be throwing away any work or projects that are left. We need to start getting the gym cleared out to have the gym floor re-sealed. If you can not make these three days, please call the office (715) 787-3211 and make other arrangements. If you leave a message on the school voicemail, we will get it. The road is open in front of the school. The road has gravel put down on it. Thanks for your prompt attention to this, Mr. Haffner

A huge congratulations goes out to Jack Goers who , entered the 2020 WI Land+Water Conservation Association Poster Contest with this years’ theme “Where Would We Bee Without Pollinators?” At Shawano County’s competition he received a first place for his age division (K-1st). In January, Jack’s poster went to the regional contest (Lake Michigan Area) where he also took first place. All first place posters from each participating County in the State in each of the five age divisions continued on to the state level held March 4th - 5th in Green Bay. All 466 attendees of the WI Land + Water State Conference had the opportunity to cast their votes for their favorite poster in each age division. Jack Goers’ poster was the second place winner in his age division. Way to go Jack!

If you would like to purchase a brick from the 1935 building, please stop down to school between the hours of 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. We will be there M-F this week. The bricks will be sold "as is." You will have to clean some of the mortar off of them. If you break the brick, just come back and we will find you another. We would like to sell the bricks for a dollar. We will use the money to purchase equipment for the new school. If you would like to donate more than a dollar, you may.

Dear Parents, As we wind down the school year, we need your help. If you are getting school lunches, the school year is ending. We need to get an accurate count of who would still like SUMMER meals-delivered. Please call school and confirm this with our secretaries by Friday, June 5th. We are in the office from 8:00am-4:00 pm. If we are not in the office, you can leave a message on our voicemail identifying yourself and how many lunches that you need. Please let us know if we should call you back. Students are going to be allowed to keep their chromebooks at home. If you wish to turn the chromebooks into school, you may. Seniors are to turn in their chromebooks, cases, and chargers to the office. BAND INSTRUMENTS-Students can keep their instruments at home to practice OR you can turn them back in to school. Please pick up homework. The road in front of school is open from the Lutheran church to school OR over Pingel’s hill (Highview). We have a lot of art projects, etc...that don’t work to deliver in the lunch vans. Sincerely, Newell E. Haffner District Administrator/4K-5 Principal

Gresham Lion’s Club would like to announce a new memorial pavilion is planned to be placed at Weed Dam, (outside of Gresham) in honor of Tim Paiser, of the Gresham Lions Club. The pavilion will include one bathroom and an open shelter area with picnic tables. Tim Paiser was a dedicated member of the Lions Club for 15+ years. He spent countless hours planning and preparing for the annual memorial and fall horse rides. Because of his dedication and hard work, Tim was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow award for 2018. Tim proudly wore his yellow lions vest and enjoyed volunteering many hours and donating to the Lion’s club. Tim was an active member of the Gresham FFA Alumni, as well as the Wisconsin Farm Bureau. Tim is most importantly remembered for the time he spent in Richmond, farming with his two sons. Tim left this physical world on September, 23 2019. He is deeply missed by his family, friends, the club, and the community. Our hopes are to have our community and others respectfully and safely utilize and enjoy this pavilion as Tim would have wanted. Please watch the Gresham Lion’s Facebook page for updates as they build. Thank you. Donations to the Gresham Lion’s Club are welcome and all proceeds go towards the building and maintenance of the pavilion.

Families of Kindergarten-Grade 6 students: Remember your Six Flags Read to Succeed reading logs that you have been working on all year? You can still turn these in for a free ticket to Six Flags Great America! Even though the tickets will look slightly different with the parks being closed, you can still earn a ticket for future use. My kids have been trying to work in each of their classes each day. It's fun to see them face-time some of their friends to work on things together too. Thank you to ALL of their teachers for putting together the work for them to complete. Here are just a few highlights from lately- Hannah is going to state for solo ensemble for her vocal solo--thanks Mrs. Koz! She received a 🌟 1st on her district level 'virtual' recording that she had to send in. Mrs. Koz recorded the accompaniment so she could sing along to it and record the video. Thanks Mrs. Koz for encouraging her to do this. Josie has been loving her planting projects from Mr. Zobeck, her books to read from Mrs. White, and has been doing a lot of painting in her spare time too. Allie is loving writing and receiving letters from Mrs. Easter and Mrs. Sorensen and others in the community. Allie has also been enjoying her own seed planting activity. JJ has been working through his class material and looks forward to the phone calls from his teacher, Mrs. Philippi. He also loves to give himself stickers when he finishes something. Together the kids have been getting exercise clearing away the brush and filling in holes in a part of our land like on the old frontier. They've also been using up lots of sidewalk chalk outside. Our two dogs are getting spoiled from tons of walks together. -Heidi Cerveny

Great news! Our public libraries will be re-opening (sort of!) on April 27th by offering curbside pickup of materials. This means that patrons and students can request library materials by phone or email. Library staff will designate a pickup date and time for the patron, collect the materials, checkout the materials to the patron, and then set the materials outside the library doors at the specific pickup time for the patron to collect. Patrons will need to contact the library location where they would like to pickup the materials to organize a curbside pickup: Birnamwood: 715-449-3120, bir@shawanolibrary.org Bonduel: 715-758-2267, bon@shawanolibrary.org Mattoon: 715-489-3333, mat@shawanolibrary.org Shawano: 715-526-3829, sha@shawanolibrary.org Tigerton: 715-535-2194, tig@shawanolibrary.org Wittenberg: 715-253-2936, wit@shawanolibrary.org In addition to physical materials, the public library offers a ton of digital resources including ebooks, audiobooks, digital magazines, streaming movies and TV series, animated children's picture books, college prep courses, core adult skills courses, and music and art instruction lessons which are all available at infosoup.org (actually, there's a lot more digital resources, but those are the most popular). For patrons that may have been caught without a library card when the libraries closed, that's OK! Staff can issue library cards by phone (715-526-3829), email (sha@shawanolibrary.org) or by using this handy online form: https://infosoup.info/ws/mar-31-2020/apply-library-card-online

March 27, 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians, Thank you for picking up your student(s) essential learning materials from the gym. In with their essential learning materials, we have provided you with homework for your student(s) to complete. We are assigning ESSENTIAL learning activities. Please don’t stress at the sheer volume of materials that you have gotten. Some teachers printed off the whole rest of the year. Some teachers printed off one week of activities. Please wait to hear from your teachers about the expectations. They are going to be flexible as this is our first try at virtual education. We are going to make mistakes, but we are going to do the best that we can for you and your students. If there is a problem with completing a packet, please call your teachers. Let them know what is going on. The teachers can be flexible, but the homework must be completed. If you get lunch deliveries, we will pick up the old packet and give out a new packet on April 3, 2020 and every Friday after this. We are not delivering food on April 10, 2020. There will be a double lunch and breakfast bag on Thursday’s drop off. If you don’t get lunch deliveries, we will have a bin at the front doors for you to put your homework in. The office staff will be emptying it multiple times a day. We would like to leave at 4:00 pm. We are working on an overnight drop off solution. At this moment, we are going to be grading the homework. We have not received any guidance from the state on what this is going to look like. We will not be putting any grades into SKYWARD until after we receive direction from the state on how best to proceed. We will keep you posted via email and the app as we get information. Teachers will be available via phone, text message, or email. Teachers will be calling the numbers listed in SKYWARD. If we don’t have a correct phone number for you in SKYWARD, then you will need to call the office and have it changed. This will help you and our teachers to communicate more effectively. Junior High and High School students need to check their email for updates. If you don’t have the internet, the teachers will call to talk to these students. Thank you for your patience in this confusing and frustrating time. There are so many people with lives that have been changed due to the Coronavirus. It is so hard to know what to do and when to do it. Please observe social distancing and wash/sanitize your hands frequently. If you have any issues or need to talk about school-related issues. Just call the school-715-787-3211 and leave a message. We will call you back as soon as possible. Sincerely, Newell E. Haffner Benjamin Heninger haffnen@gresham.k12.wi.us heningb@gresham.k12.wi.us

Dear Students, I want to give you an update with the information that I know. This week, I treated it like it was a spring break just to see what Governor Evers and President Trump were going to do with this pandemic. We are delivering Lunch and Breakfast to all of the children under 18 in the District that requested them. The secretaries did a great job of calling all of the families in our school district, checking on internet access, and inquiring about meals. We will be delivering your locker and gym locker contents during the week of March 23-27. We will be putting your locker contents in a black bag with your name on it. This limits the opportunity for exposure of the school staff to the coronavirus. During the week of March 23-27, Teachers will be coming in to create virtual lessons and packet work. I am hoping that we can get this out to students on March 30, 2020 while we deliver lunches. We are trying to determine the best option for providing access to learning. This may include district issued chromebooks. We have a lot more questions than answers right now: Do we have graduation? How do we grade students? What about scholarships? To name just a few of them. We are trying to figure all of this out, BUT it is a very slow process. Here is ONE THING that I know: If you were missing work before 3/13/2020, then you should make all of this up. These 5 weeks could IN THEORY be your 3rd quarter, 4th quarter, and semester grades. I want grades to be as high as possible if this is the case. You can submit missing work via email, work exchange when the bus drops off your meal, traditional mail, pictures on your phones, and/or submitted through google classroom. Any work assigned after 3/13, may or may not be counted in your final grades. The state has not clarified it’s stance on this issue. Please don’t stress in this confusing time. Let me do all of that for all of you. I have faith that this will all work out. Have a great day and keep checking your emails for updates. Please keep in mind that all of what I just typed could change in an instant depending on Governor Evers and President Trump. This is the best update that I can do as of 5:54 pm. Sincerely, Mr H

March 18, 2020 Dear Students, Parents, Staff, and Community Members, Based upon the most current information available to us from the State of Wisconsin and the CDC, it is the belief of the Gresham School District that we will be taking another week to evaluate the situation with Coronavirus (COVID-19). Our ability to anticipate what happens next remains quite fluid, as both Federal and State governments keep changing requirements for schools. We are having the teachers come in on Thursday and/or Friday to prepare for virtual learning opportunities. We will be prepping for the chance to grow as partners in education, which this pandemic has suddenly afforded us. This means that we will not be handing out chromebooks on March 20, 2020, as originally planned. We will reschedule this distribution for a future time. We will send out another email or app announcement next week with further details, as they are warranted. We have been asked about grades, credits, graduation, etc. and whether or not there is a possibility of school being out for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. We are not sure of any definitive answers to these questions at this particular moment. We believe that by allowing another week for everything to settle out, it will give us a better opportunity to do what is in the best interests of students, parents, staff, and the entire Gresham community. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this uncertain and confusing time. Sincerely, Newell E. Haffner Benjamin Heninger haffnen@gresham.k12.wi.us heningb@gresham.k12.wi.us

The Ecology class visited Marathon County Waste Management yesterday. It was a great experience that was led by two very informative guides. We were able to see the different parts of the landfill and operations. I think we all came away with a greater knowledge of where our garbage goes and how to better manage it. In class, we are currently discussing energy efficiency and this trip was an important part of our unit so that we could better understand first hand what happens to our waste and how to better dispose of hazardous materials as well. It was a great career exploration activity as both of our guides absolutely love their jobs!

Dear Gresham Wildcats past and present, I am looking for all of the state tournament appearances that the Gresham Wildcats have had. I know that we have had a baseball team appear at state and I believe that I have heard legends of cross-country and track teams winning or placing second at state. I started my teaching career while the legend of Ron Schmidt and his soccer teams was just starting to grow.I don’t know if our soccer teams made appearances at the state tournament or not. I would like to know the sport, whether it was girls or boys, and what year we won or took second at state. Could you please email me at haffnen@gresham.k12.wi.us? I would really like to know all of the state tournament appearances that we have had. Please circulate this to anyone that can help me out. Thanks, Newell E. Last night the Lady Wildcats volleyball team lost 0-3 to Wabeno/Laona. The team ended their season with an outstanding 19-7 record. We would like to thank our seniors, Karisa Nietzer, Brooklyn Hoffman, Jayden Jensen, Jada James and Monique Terrio for their many years of hard work and dedication to the volleyball program. Over the past three years, these ladies were part of two regional championships and two conference championships. Coach Wild, Coach Hoffman and the student athletes would like to thank the parents, staff and community for their support. It was amazing to see the number of people that came out to cheer on the team during our playoff run.
